Seabirds will lay eggs in the hollows formed where nodular cysts fill with gas and burst through the leathery surface of the skin.
Crabs and fish will make a shaggy ruin of the underside, attracting increasingly large tiers of secondary predators.
The nuts will slough off entirely, dropping to seed a new ecosystem in the dark below.
Insects will be legion. Tugboat rats will walk the tow-ropes to colonize the ever-ripening isle. The monkeys' origin will remain unknown, as will the burrowing landworms'.
